The UK is gearing up to implement a new council tax surcharge, known as the “mansion tax,” which will target high-value properties. Scheduled to commence in April 2028, this tax will apply to homes valued over £2 million. To accurately assess property values, tax authorities are set to carry out inspections that may involve evaluating internal features and taking precise measurements.
The proposed surcharge scales with property value: owners of homes worth between £2 million and £2.5 million will face an annual charge of £2,500. This fee increases to £3,500 for properties up to £3.5 million, £5,000 for those valued between £3.5 million and £5 million, and £7,500 for homes exceeding £5 million. Importantly, this surcharge will be separate from the existing council tax and is designed to adjust annually in line with inflation rates.
Valuation officers will consider various factors during inspections, including the size of the property, architectural details, and the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and storeys. To ensure compliance, the government has stipulated that obstruction of valuation officers could lead to a £200 fine. Additionally, property owners who fail to provide necessary information without a valid reason might incur penalties up to £500.
These evaluations will be conducted in agreement with property owners and adhere to official guidelines, the government has assured. This initiative aims to ensure a fair assessment of property values, crucial for implementing the surcharge effectively.
