Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest airport after recording higher passenger numbers in July. While Heathrow welcomed 7.86 million passengers, Istanbul Airport surpassed it with 8.15 million. This shift highlights a new leader in passenger volume among European airports.
The passenger count at Heathrow showed a decline of 1.5% compared to July of the previous year, a decrease partly attributed to disruptions related to the Middle East conflict. In contrast, Istanbul Airport experienced a 2.3% increase in traffic, demonstrating its growing capacity and appeal. This shift in rankings has reignited discussions over the need for Heathrow’s expansion, including its proposed third runway, which aims to bolster the airport’s capacity significantly.
Heathrow currently operates near its full potential with two runways and has plans for a £33 billion expansion to accommodate up to 150 million passengers annually. The airport management argues that this expansion is crucial for enhancing the UK’s international connectivity, trade, and tourism, emphasizing the necessity of additional capacity to maintain its competitive edge.
Since its opening in 2018, Istanbul Airport has quickly risen in prominence. It boasts a larger operational site, functioning 24/7, with three active runways and a fourth expected to be operational by the end of 2026. This infrastructure positions it as a formidable contender in the aviation sector, capable of handling increased passenger volumes efficiently.
Meanwhile, other UK airports, London Stansted and Manchester, reported their busiest July on record, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. These figures underline the growing demand for air travel within the UK, despite Heathrow’s recent slip in rankings.
